grade of hair is better than another: black women have got to the
point where they wear a wide range of hair textures. So, really, any
hair that covers your head is good hair. Perfectly good hair.
The height of absurdity, a hubbub recently took place over President
Barack Obama's daughter, 11-year old Malia Obama, wearing her hair in
twists when the First Family visited Rome this past summer. Believe
or not, those nitwits over at the conservative blog Free Republic
trash-talked this lovely young lady with such tripe as saying was
unfit to represent America for not wearing straight hair.
Those Neanderthals have a hell of a lot of nerve. Just who do they
think they are to sit on their delusions of superiority and wax
ignorant? The can be just a stuck with their heads up their behinds
as they want to be, but, it's a damn shame they have to insult Black
females and offend civilized people in general with their backward
mentality. It is also sure-fire fighting words to any self-respecting
black man walking around drawing breath. And, frankly, I'm surprised
Barack Obama and really disappointed Michelle Obama didn't blast the
morons.
There is a time and place for being correct, wonderfully
accepted by white folk and there's a time to put jackasses in check.
One of the most wonderful things about our women is that they have
been dealt dirt by this society, told they must aspire to white ideas
of womanhood and, like no other women of color, have turned it on
America and, in turn, the world, with a sweet vengeance. There are
those who resemble, say, Vanessa Williams, two shades off a banana,
sliver lipped and narrow nosed. There are those who resemble Alfre
Woodard with Negroid facial features and a body like the map of
Africa. And she can wear any hairstyle from Afro to flaxen. There
are those in between. Bottom line, the image of African American
women, today, is a panorama.
Doesn't make the least bit of sense, at this date in time, to be hung
up about some hair. Ingrid Banks, associate professor of Black
Studies at the University of California—Santa Barbara, told the New
York Times, "For Black women, you're damned if you, damned if you
don't. If you've got straight hair, you're pegged as selling out. If
you don't straighten your hair, you're seen as not practicing
appropriate groom practices." Damned if they do and damned if they
don't? It's high time that changed to "Anybody don't like it can kiss
my Black …", well you get the idea.
Chris Rock got a documentary out -- Paul Mooney's in it – called
Good Hair. The film copped a jury prize at a Sundance festival.
Haven't seen it. But I trust Chris Rock's cultural integrity and know
damn good and well Paul Mooney is not going for the dumb stuff. It'd
tickle me half to death if Good Hair does anything help bolster the
self-esteem of Black women and girls, whether their hair is nappy as a
rug, curly as some Arby's French fries, straight as a ruler or they're
bald as an egg.

Black Braids- how to grow long black hair my way
In this article i want to share my secret for getting long black braids-Ok I have come across this great hair oil called Mira hair oil and it is great for black braids , now since I don’t have Caucasian hair, I want to share how I use this amazing oil with you So first I don't wash my hair everyday. I don’t do this because i have black braids on. Rather I wash my hair every 3-4 days.
I use the oil as hair massage oil and a leave in treatment. The oil has no smell so it sits well with my regimen I usually leave Mira hair oil for about 20-30 min.
Then wash it out and shampoo and conditioner. Now I don’t use commercial types I use the ones sold by Mira herbals. I wash my hair with Luke warm water and my final rinse is with cool water. - This by the way minimizes hair loss and allows healthy hair growth When I am done washing my hair I then detangle and braid my hair. I take a tiny amount of Mira hair oil and rub the oil on my scalp. Then I repeat this in the next 3-4 day I should mention that I actually take out my braids and wash it every 3-4 days. I also apply the oil on the ends of my hair ends every night! Now if you want long black braids you need to follow my example. This has stopped with my regimen with Mira hair oil
When I started using the oil I would use it every night before bed for super fast growth.
I was determined to get back my healthy hair I had as a child
further more I wear a scarf to bed. I never put it in a ponytail or wear it loose, so it will not frizz up.
If you don’t have a natural shampoo you can make one by mixing a cup of corn flour with a cup of water diluted with 3 drops of apple cider vinegar
now these is a myth out that that if you want long black hair you should not wash your hair often, this is wrong, African hair is just like any other hair and it needs to be washed often
If you want healthy black braids, you should wash your hair when your scalp gets dirty and stop using commercial hair products that contain chemicals which dry out the scalp
When you do wash it your hair, concentrate on cleaning your scalp. You don't need to shampoo your braids at all. Try and ensure your scalp is kept clean. Mira herbals even makes a "dry" shampoo which is perfect for braids.
As an added bonus you can use braid spray which is beneficial for your scalp, especially if you have scalp problems.
If you want long healthy braid I advice you use Mira hair oil
It helped me grow healthy and long black braids and it will help you as well

Review: Angela Davis Honors Hero in Frederick Douglass Book
When I was a child, I heard stories about the so-called "activist" Angela Davis. We'd whisper her name in the schoolyard - as if betraying our parents, those very ones who were themselves fooled into thinking that Ms. Davis was truly an "enemy of the state."
We couldn't speak of her in our social studies class. And if our afros were too large, we'd have to get them cut - too much like that "troublemaker," we were told.
So when I received an assignment to review a Frederick Douglass book written by "troublemaker Davis," those feelings came back to me. I wondered (1) What could Ms. Davis possibly say about Frederick Douglass that hasn't already been said? and (2) Why should she be the one to say them? Is she even qualified to write a Frederick Douglass book?
I found my answers-and a lot more.
For certain, there are many books that cover the life of Frederick Douglass but this Frederick Douglass book reveals that there was far more to Mr. Douglass than we were taught in school (seriously, how much Black history is ever REALLY taught in public schools, or any other for that matter?) and that even more than a century later, his life is a teaching tool for all of us: Black, White, young, old, rich man, poor man - and that we are all inextricably intertwined - whether you want to believe that or not.
The Review: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave by Angela Davis
In this Frederick Douglass book, editor Greg Ruggiero opens with a correlation between the life and times of Black slaves vs. the illustrious campaign of then-presidential candidate Barack Obama. He raises the issue of race in America, not from a historical standpoint, but from today-now-with the reminding of the infamous Rev. Jeremiah Wright and the fiasco that almost derailed his friend Obama.
It was during this time that the concept of a Frederick Douglass book began. While reading transcripts by Angela Davis, who also wrote two powerful lectures about Frederick Douglass, Ruggiero describes himself as "riveted" by the thought of introducing these two persons of like-mind to a new generation of young readers, and as he so puts it: "What better political moment could there be to publish these texts and introduce Angela Davis and Frederick Douglass together-two of the most important abolitionist intellectuals in U.S. history?" Hence, the Frederick Douglass book was put into motion.
Ruggiero revisits the 1960s when a paranoid American government arrested a young, multi-lingual scholar, magna cum laude graduate from Brandeis University. Her name: Angela Davis.
To the federal government Davis was a political "trifecta." This triple threat was young and hip; highly intelligent; and wore her African heritage proudly - as is evident by her mile-high 'fro.
With President Nixon in the oval office and Ronald Reagan as the Governor of California, Ms. Davis was seen as 'fresh meat,' having accepted a two-year teaching post in the philosophy department at the University of California in Los Angeles - especially once word spread that she was a member of the Communist party.
Those were frightening times indeed. It was the era of the Black Panther movement, the Civil Rights movement - and everything in between. White America was not prepared. A lashing out would occur.
Since her year-and-a-half incarceration in the late 1960s, Davis would continue her course as a freedom fighter, a movement worker - not just for Black people, but for women of every creed and color. She would find the correlation between Douglass' struggles to live free and the women's movement in her critically acclaimed study published in 1981 titled, Women, Race & Class, a study that linked Douglass with the first women's rights convention, in which he made a public appearance to appeal for equality for all women regardless of color or status.
This fascinating Frederick Douglass book portrays the best of humanity - and sadly, the worst.

Man dominates Man...
Frederick Douglass himself gives us a somber glimpse into his daily existence. For those of us who'd like to believe we knew what that life entailed (because we've seen Alex Haley's Roots), we couldn't be further from the truth. The brutality with which Douglass endured was nothing short of incredible.
It wasn't just the beatings, but the helplessness. Douglass describes "the most heart-rending shrieks of an own aunt of mine, whom he [the overseer] used to tie up to a joist, and whip upon her naked back till she was literally covered with blood." There were numerous incidences when his master would appear out of nowhere - as if to be all places at all times - so as to "catch" some slave at some sort of treacherous act, when their only treachery, if indeed it was treachery, was Black at birth.
Reasons for beatings became so common it seemed Douglass was beaten just because it was Tuesday.
But as much brutality, violence and pillaging is described in this Frederick Douglass book, both Davis and Douglass also bring us hope.
In his description of the day he stood toe-to-toe with "The Snake," the slave-owner (or "slave-breaker" as Davis calls him), Douglass reveals how he 'became the master and the master became the slave.' On that day Master Covey attacked Douglass, who fought back. Point for point, the teen proved stronger, stood taller than Covey was accustomed.
Calling for help from his nearby slaves-all of whom refused-Covey realized he was a beaten man. He lost something that day-the last day he would attempt to whip Douglass.
In her most diplomatic method, Davis proves what I never realized until now: The Black American slave era was not so much about Blacks and slavery as it was about the state of all humanity. In his moment of truth, Covey proved as much a victim of slavery as his own slaves. That era changed us all: Blacks, White, rich, poor - we were all affected, whether for the better, or for the worst-we were all affected.
Today the late, great Frederick Douglass is known as an abolitionist, freedom fighter, orator and fighter for the underdog - all those things. And Davis has shown to be a formidable opponent, gaining respect even from her former enemies. She continues the struggle even today.
Yes, Davis is more than adequately qualified to pen this Frederick Douglass book.
Their lives connected through resistance, through adversity, hatred and fear, Davis shows in this very compelling volume that Frederick Douglass was simply a man. And what all men and women were meant to be...free.

How To Make Gift Bags From Brown Paper Bags
Brown paper bags are common packaging materials for department stores, restaurants and grocery stores. They can also be designed nicely for high-end designer stores or be used as decorative gift bags. Brown bags can be made thicker to hold heavy items. These packaging materials can also be used for arts and crafts and can be turned into artwork.
Gift bags are used to hold small presents for birthdays and other occasions. It will require less effort to wrap gifts if you just place them in nicely decorated brown paper bags. You can create your own gift brown bag by using basic craft supplies like scissors, curling ribbons, glue, printed scrapbook papers, brown paper bags with handles, and trimmings of your choice.
Cut 2 pieces of scrapbook paper into the same size as one side of the brown bag. Attach 1 scrapbook cut out to one side of the brown bag and glue the other cut out on the opposite side. Do the same procedure to the two remaining sides and attach 1 piece of scrapbook cut out on the front and another one at the back of the brown bag.
Now, cut a 1-1/2 long strip of curling ribbon and place the ribbon on top of one of the blades. Pull the ribbon tightly across the shears to make the ribbon curly. Attach the curly ribbons around the handles of the Brown paper bags. You can attach the ribbons with glue or tape. To make them more secure, you can also tie the ribbons to the handles.
To make the bags look more like gift bags, add more embellishments like stickers, paper or plastic flowers, rhinestones and other adornments you can find at craft stores. Pick embellishments that are not too heavy so that the paper bags won't be weighed down. If you want your gift bags to look classy, use silk flowers instead of plastic or paper flowers.
Confine the embellishments to the front and back of the bags. Placing delicate decorations on the sides of the paper bags will subject them to damage when the bags are folded. Use thick kinds of brown paper bags so they can hold up to the weight of the embellishments. Check the handles on the bags to make sure they are well secured to the bag.
If you plan to make a lot of gift bags from paper bags, you should buy the brown bags from a packaging supplier to get good prices for them. You will also have a hard time looking for big volumes of brown bags at a supermarket. Search for packaging suppliers that also supply paper bags.
