Cheerleading without Pom Poms
This is the 3rd article in a series devoted to the impact of the Business Plan on Small and Mid-sized businesses.
In previous articles I focused on the pressing need for business planning as we exit the Recession, and the specifics and definitions of the Business Planning Process, as well as the benefits and value of participating in the planning process.
For this article, I have identified and categorized the behavior, attitudes and management styles of the Senior Executive responsible for the development and preparation of the Business and Marketing Plan. I strongly believe that the Small Business Owner and/or Manager will find this examination to be valuable to their own particular situation.
It is clear that the successful development of the ultimate implementation of the planning process rests, in large measure, to the attitude, dedication, discipline and commitment of the Senior Executive responsible for the organization.
During the past 30 years I have worked with literally thousands of senior executives and managers from all types and sizes of businesses; as a Business Planning Consultant and as a senior executive at global management training and education organizations. I designed and developed the 5 day American Management Association Course in Marketing Planning and have conducted hundreds of Business and Marketing planning seminars, on both a public basis as well as in-company training.
Each of the following types were very successful in developing and implementing their plan. They each exhibited some common characteristics but approached them quite differently. The following scenarios portray these senior executives approach to planning leadership in terms of style.
Senior executive types:
- The Doer
- The Delegator
- The Team Member
The Doer
As the newly appointed President and CEO, David F. attended a course in Business and Marketing Planning which I conducted. He was accompanied by his VP Marketing. They developed their first Business and Marketing Plan during the course of the seminar. by crafting those parts of the plan which had been conducted during each the sessions and by seminars-end had completed the eight step planning process.
The Delegator
George U. had worked his way up to be the CEO of a diversified multi-divisional company which had never developed a formal strategic Business Plan. George's collaborative management style and self confidence as leader enabled him to build consensus among his senor management team. He delegated the planning details to his senior staff by providing a broad vision and Mission as to the overall corporate direction. He established guiding principles which provided the planning structure and framework for a comprehensive and detailed plan to be created.He was the guiding hand for his planning team members.
The Team Member
Robert K . founded and was CEO of this small but rapidly growing organization. He recognized the need for business and marketing planning as a necessary methodology to structure future profitable growth and understood that the entrepreneur "gun slinging approach" would not work in the future.
He immersed himself into the Planning Process as a fully functioning member of the senior management planning team; examining each detail of the firm's operation with the questioning enthusiasm of a new ambitious employee looking to make his mark. He was particularly adept at overturning many of his own "sacred cows" in the process. As a result he engendered respect with fellow team members resulting in a successful outcome.
The attitudes and behavior exhibited by these different senior executives were clear. Although they approached the planning process very differently in terms of their personal input and organizational situation they each showed the following qualities and characteristics:
- Intellectual determination, drive and discipline
- Dedication
- Commitment to the process
- Willingness to listen and evaluate others ideas and input
- Sensitivity and respect to those ultimately expected to implement the plan
In summary, each of these executives was the CHIEF Planning CHEERLEADER AND Planning CHAMPION within their organizations; - which I found to be contagious and motivational for their staffs and business and to the success of their efforts.

Finding Patriotic Costumes

Dreamboats & Petticoats – The Playhouse Theatre
West End musicals have spawned from many things over the years – novels, old movies, children's stories, modern blockbusters, even ABBA songs. But Dreamboats and Petticoats takes theatre in a new direction, by turning a compilation CD of music from the 50's and 60's into a full-blown musical.
A simple story complimented by a classic rock ‘n' roll soundtrack and a group of professional actors – you couldn't get a much more perfect mixture for a musical on the stage.
The script to Dreamboats and Petticoats is a love-soaked teenage romance. The coming of age story of every young girls dreams (well, perhaps not so much in modern times) it follows heartthrobs Bobby and Norman as they compete for the affections and attention of sex-goddess Sue (ex-Hollyoaks star Jennifer Biddall), but as shy schoolgirl Laura (Daisy Wood Davis) comes of age she suddenly manages to get Bobby's attention and in the end, his heart. A predictable, yet heart-warming story supported by a wonderful cast and a classic track listing.
Playing on the success of the smash-hit compilation album(s), Dreamboats and Petticoats easily appeals to all those who grew up in that era, a time when things were simpler and pop songs were all about love. The non-stop hits keep coming, with 44 chart-toppers from the rock ‘n' roll era.
The premise of the story is simple enough – the gang are involved in a song writing competition, the delivery of which appeals to the modern audience's obsession with The X-Factor and Britain's Got Talent style shows. Oddly, Dreamboats and Petticoats is set in Essex at St Mungo's Youth Club and not in a US setting, which brings the story closer to home.
It's a clear testament to the skill of writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, the producers Bill Kenwright and Laurie Mansfield and the rest of the cast and crew that over a million people have been to see the production since its original release. A number of compilation CDs by the same name have appeared since.
The entire cast work well as an ensemble and bounce through the various scenes and well-designed sets with believable enthusiasm that can be appreciated and admired. There are some obvious rising stars among the cast Daisy Wood-Davis who plays Laura makes a huge impression and has a wonderful voice. Ben Freeman does a wonderful job of playing an egomaniac heart-throb Norman, but we're all happy when Bobby finally gets his girl.
Dreamboats and Petticoats is a lively production, with a heart-warming (if simple) story and a foot-tapping soundtrack that will leave you with a smile on your face. With classic tracks from the likes of Del Shannon, Roy Orbison, Phil Spector, Eddie Cochran, Helen Shapiro – you'll certainly have a rockin' ‘n' rollin' time. The audience will literally be dancing in the aisles.

Turn A Basic Tutu Into An Amazing Ballet Costume
To turn a basic tutu into an amazing ballet costume, start by doing some research. What period of history is the ballet is set in? The costume can be altered to reflect that time period. Historic costumes are the most interesting to reproduce and imitating an historic costume can be quite fun. Tutus have changed throughout history. To make a romantic tutu an exciting romp into history, research the romantic period. The romantic period was known for its ethereal flowing tutus. By starting with a romantic tutu and adding a matching colored bodice, the basic tutu can become a romantic costume. Take the tutu back in time and celebrate its intended purpose. Make it grand with details that reflect a period of the past.

The Most Influential Artists during the Golden Age of Hip Hop
Run D.M.C
Run D.M.C. was the genre's first wildly popular group. Formed in 1983 in Hollis, Queens, the trio quickly became known for clever, aggressive lyrics and simple, speaker-busting beats. The group is also credited with creating the "hip hop look" by replacing the flashy disco-era clothes worn by other rappers with hats, sneakers, and "street" clothes - essentially the same uniform worn by today's hip hop artists. While Run hailed from Queens, the south Bronx is generally considered the birthplace of hip hop culture. The crew Boogie Down Productions took its name from the borough's nickname, and released a slew of influential albums between 1987 and 1992. After the death of founding member DJ Scott La Rock in 1987, frontman KRS-One took the group in a more political direction. Songs like "Remix for P is Free" not only laid the foundation for gangsta rap, but also emphasized the importance of Jamaican reggae sampling within hip hop music. Today, KRS-One is considered one of the seminal artists of 80s hip hop. But his legacy is often overshadowed by that of the louder, showier Public Enemy.
Public Enemy
Formed on Long Island in the early 80s, Public Enemy was fronted by Chuck D and included Flava Flav - who is better known to the younger generation as a reality TV star - Professor Griff, and Terminator X. PE's 1988 album "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" is heralded as not only one of the best rap albums of all time, but one of the greatest records released in any genre in the last few decades. The album is known for its sample-heavy beats and politically incendiary lyrics, showcased on songs like "Rebel Without a Pause" and "Bring the Noise".
De La Soul
The trio De La Soul also hails from Long Island, and were crucial to the golden age as they introduced quirky lyrics and elements of jazz into hip hop. The group is still going strong, and has had a direct influence on younger artists like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and the Black Eyed Peas.
LL Cool J
Across the island, in the borough of Queens, a teenager who called himself LL Cool J - Ladies Love Cool James - was busy making the first rap records that unabashedly incorporated traditional pop structure into hip hop songs. The Brooklyn rapper is considered one of the pioneers of fast rap, and his skills have gone largely unmatched to this day. Kane got his start as a member of the famed Juice Crew, but went on to release a handful of classic solo albums. He's still active today.
EMPD
Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith, known collectively as EPMD, are also still making music. Like many other golden age rappers, the duo hails from Long Island. On albums like "Strictly Business", the group popularized the funky, sample-heavy beats that contrasted with disco-based old school hip hop. EPMD fronts the rap clique Hit Squad, which includes rappers Redman and Das EFX, among others.
But what about the West Coast?
While New York was the indisputable home of hip hop until the 2000s, when rappers from all over the south and Midwest took over, Los Angeles was almost as important as the Big Apple during the golden age.
NWA
NWA's 1988 album "Straight Outta Compton" is recognized as the true beginning of gangsta rap, which remains one of hip hop's most popular subgenres. The lyrics, which painted vivid pictures of life in Compton, one of L.A.'s toughest neighborhoods, were so explicit that the group's albums were banned from stores and their songs were pulled from the radio. Every member of the group, including Ice Cube, MC Wren, DJ Yella and Eazy E, went on to release popular solo albums as well.
Dr Dre
But one NWA member stands above the rest. Dr. Dre, who helped found the group, is arguably the most important figure in rap history. His work with NWA would've been enough to cement his place in the genre's hall of fame, but it was his 1992 solo album "The Chronic" that took the world by storm.
With hits like "Nuthin' But a G Thang" and "Let Me Ride", the album not only set the standard for the next 20 years of gangsta rap, it was also the first rap album by a black artist that was fully embraced by young, white suburbanites. While Dre's lyrics were often violent and reflected the perils of street life, his bouncy, bassy production and frequent collaborations with then-unknown rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg were irresistible to music fans of all stripes.
Dre's second solo album, "The Chronic 2001", is considered one of the best rap albums of the last decade. In the years between the release of the two albums, Dre saw his Death Row label, whose most popular artist was Tupac Shakur, rise and then quickly fall after Tupac was murdered. He later founded the Aftermath imprint and brought Eminem and 50 Cent, two of the most influential rappers of their generation, into the spotlight.

Taking Risks: Star Trek and the Moon Landing
With the J.J. Abrams Star Trek "origins" movie, this significant franchise is getting a much-deserved reboot into the popular consciousness. At the very end of the movie, when Leonard Nimoy recited the famous "Space: the final frontier..." intro and we heard the original TV show theme music, I was suddenly beamed into nostalgia land.
I never considered myself to be a Trekkie, or Trekker, or Trekkist, or whatever you want to call them. Nevertheless, as a kid I made sure to catch every episode of Star Trek because the stories were thought-provoking and just plain fun.
Sure, it was mostly a cheesy, low-budget fantasy show with laughably cheap sets, but Star Trek also featured some high-quality, well-written shows among the occasional mediocre ones. Some episodes were brilliant, some were so-so, but none were totally bad. Even the worst ones had something of interest to offer. Star Trek always made you think, in the same way The Twilight Zone would grab you and turn your usual thought patterns inside out and upside down.
Returning to Yesterday with Star Trek: The Original Series (ST:TOS)
Not too long ago, I was surprised to learn that all 79 episodes of ST:TOS can be found at CBS.com, remastered in Hi-Def with no commercials. And that brings me to a recent revelation. When I found this Trek treasure-trove, it was hard to decide what I should watch. Over the years, I'd seen most of the shows over and over again, but there were some that I had only caught once when they first aired.
Pretty much at random, I played "Return to Tomorrow" and visited an episode I hadn't seen in over forty years. From the perspective of an adult, I found this story to be a fine example of the worst and best aspects of the original Star Trek.
The Enterprise comes across a planet that harbors pure-energy remnants of three survivors from a race that had died off half a million years earlier. These aliens seek to "borrow" the bodies of Enterprise crew members (Kirk, Spock and a hot chick) so they can build androids into which they will transfer their non-corporeal consciousness -- then they can live again as physical beings. Complications and a corny tragic romance ensue in predictable fashion.
A Prophetic Monolog: Captain Kirk's famous "Risk" Speech
Twenty minutes into this episode, the key Enterprise members are trying to decide if they should comply with the alien's wishes. All agree to go along except Dr. McCoy who considers the procedure to be unpredictable and far too risky. This prompts Kirk to give the following over-the-top speech, embarrassingly delivered in William Shatner's trademark jolting, highly impassioned manner that has endeared him to millions of fans.
"They use to say if mankind could fly, he'd have wings -- but he did fly. He discovered he had to. Do you wish that the first Apollo mission hadn't reached the moon, or that we hadn't gone on to Mars and then to the nearest star? That's like saying you wish that you still operated with scalpels and sewed your patients up with catgut like your great-great-great-great grandfather used to. I'm in command. I could order this, but I'm not because Doctor McCoy is right in pointing out the enormous danger potential in any contact with life and intelligence as fantastically advanced as this, but I must also point out that the possibilities -- the potential for knowledge and advancement is equally great. Risk! Risk is our business. That's what this starship is all about. That's why we're aboard her. You may dissent without any prejudice. Do I hear a negative vote?"
The Moon Landing is ancient history in Star Trek's world
Did you catch that reference to "the first Apollo mission"? This show originally aired on February 9, 1968. To the audience at the time, the moon landing had not yet taken place, and it was by no means a sure thing. In fact, we now know that there were serious technical problems encountered during the landing, and it was only the uncanny piloting skills of Neil Armstrong, plus a lot of luck, that avoided a horrible disaster on that momentous day in July, 1969.
But for Captain Kirk, the moon landing was old news, as it is for us today. And this demonstrates the abiding appeal of science fiction that Star Trek brought to a global mass audience. "Risk is our business." Embrace the possibilities of the future, then some day you can look back and marvel at the wonders that have come to pass.
Past and Future Trek: Gene Roddenberry's Legacy
In many ways, Star Trek showed us what was scientifically feasible -- and in some cases, it actually made them come true. It is well-known that the cool futuristic "communicator" inspired the invention of a practical mobile phone (according to its inventor at Motorola, Dr. Martin Cooper). Now let's get busy with the universal translator, phaser, replicator, transporter, and holodeck.
Star Trek continues to lead humanity toward a wondrous future. The original series made a significant impression on the Baby Boomers, and the latest incarnation will certainly have a similar impact on Millennials who have never seen Classic Star Trek.
